PRESS RELEASE

On March 1st 2008, at 6:45 AM police troops armed with batons, shields and electroshocks without any notification attacked about four thousand peaceful protestors in the Liberty Square, Yerevan. Among the participants of the peaceful protest were senior citizens, women, children as many of them were participating in the protest with their families. On the moment of the attack majority of the people were sleeping under the tents. Notwithstanding almost 20 minutes long barehanded resistance, the police guards with severe beating, electroshock and tear-gas managed to disperse people from the square and totally destroy the tent city. Information about victims and injured is being clarified. However, there are numerous arrested.
At the very moment when Levon Ter Pertrossyan was addressing people and the troops in the square with appeal of soberness, he was blocked by police troops headed by Grisha Sargsyan, the head of guards of the acting president Kocharyan. The police demanded to leave the square. Levon Ter-Petrosyan refused to move declaring that the Liberty square is his place, and he will not go anywhere. For about two hours he has refused to obey their demands. However later on Levon Ter-Petrosyan was detained and transferred to his house by force. The house is currently blocked by troops who announce the special order not to allow anyone in and out. Thus, the First President is factually under home arrest.
