Been there, done that...PayPal is beautiful, but apparently you can't send money through them to Armenia, so it's good that it was set up in the U.S.
Anyway, time for liberals to open their wallets as much as possible, says Nicholas Kristof (who by the way is half-Armenian):

This holiday season is a time to examine who’s been naughty and who’s been nice, but I’m unhappy with my findings. The problem is this: We liberals are personally stingy.
Liberals show tremendous compassion in pushing for generous government spending to help the neediest people at home and abroad. Yet when it comes to individual contributions to charitable causes, liberals are cheapskates.
Arthur Brooks, the author of a book on donors to charity, “Who Really Cares,” cites data that households headed by conservatives give 30 percent more to charity than households headed by liberals. A study by Google found an even greater disproportion: average annual contributions reported by conservatives were almost double those of liberals.
Ani, I have been looking for a way to start raising funds for the political prisoners through the support organization in LA. When donors send money to the account in Yerevan, a considerable chunk of money is spent on bank transfer fees. A consolidated not-for-profit charity that collects the funds realizes savings in this sense.
Let's hope enough funds are raised to be able to support the families of the political prisoners. The majority of them have lost their sole breadwinner.

As for liberals being stingy - the theory goes that the liberals in this country want a more socially responsible government taking care of social problems. That may be the reason to not personally donate money but hope to allocate tax moneys to the disadvantaged. The problem is that the disadvantaged have very little power to get money from the Federal government. there was only a week of discussion for a 700 billion gift for the Wall Street people while a few billion dollar grants for CHIP or some other social program are discussed for months.
Kristof is deliberately being provocative (not unusual)--I'm not sure if this is an income-related finding, and as we know, the Republicans are wealthier; also, the article does eventually emphasize that much of the donations are religious (oh, those liberal heathens!!)
But anyway, finding ways to send money to those who need it without those greedy bankers taking their cut is important, so I hope the Telethon is a great success!
