Honest man or a fraud?

It turns out "Joe the plumber", McCain's tool for attacking Obama, is not really a plumber and is not licensed to practice plumbing. He also is not an outstanding citizen either. He owes the government $1,200 in back taxes.
There is something known as 'due diligence'. Why couldn't have the GOP done some research before telling McCain to use the guy to attack Obama? Was it one of McCain's erratic decisions like the Palin pick as VP or did the GOP really screw up?

The phrase you're searching for is "grasping at straws." (or straw men). Republicans have a long history of this, but the Internet Age is making it less effective because the news cycle and dissemination is so short now.

If the Republicans had done "due diligence" in 2000, Bush would never have been elected--a recovering alcoholic who had failed at every single job he ever held??

"So he does want to punish me, he does want to punish me for working harder to - you know, my big thing is the American Dream," Joe the plumber
Sounds like a character from the Telletubby world.
