Elisabeth Eckford after trying to enter the desegregated Little Rock Nine school in Little Rock, Arkansas, in 1957. She was not allowed and was turned away. There had been plans to assemble a group of black kids for this but then the plans were changed. Elisabeth did not know about it and showed up alone. She later described the experience as the worst in her life.

The screaming lady is Hazel Massery. Years later she apologized for harassing Ms. Eckford.
