Funny or sad?

Here is a short news item from Lragir.am. It reveals the essence of banditocracy well. I would be rolling on the floor laughing if this was about a country other than Armenia. Unfortunately, Lragir doesn't have permalinks so I have to quote the whole story.

Yesterday the Armenian State TV broadcast a report from the border with Georgia. It turns out that all the vehicles crossing the border pay a fee. Interestingly, the fees were mandated by law in 2001 but only recently the state started collecting them. The representative of the customs department gave a surprising answer when asked why they have started using the law: "After the elections we received an order to function within the law". It seems that before the elections they had orders to function outside the law.

Human rights advocate Michael Danielian shot at in Yerevan.

The leader of the Progressive Party in Armenia, Tigran Urikhanian, has shot human rights advocate and chairman of Armenian Helsinki Association Michael Danielian. Fortunately, Michael Danielian was not killed. Since Urikhanian is buddies with SS, chances of him being punished for this crime are close to nil.

Update: It is worth to mention that Urikhanian is an infamous fascist and the Progressive Party is a neo-nazi entity. While Urikhanian was assaulting and before he shot Danielian, he was yelling that Danielian was a defender of gays and a CIA agent. Clearly, Urikhanian is a menace to the society and has no place on the streets after this. But in a banditocracy, people like this get promoted. So watch the news.

Not so Kafkaesque.

A man voices his support for the opposition candidate. A day or so after that he and his handicapped brother are traveling in a car. The police stop them. While arresting them, the police accidentally open fire.

Now the handicapped person is on trial for not stopping the car after being ordered to do so and damaging a policeman's uniform while getting out of the car. more here

Two people on hunger strike detained in Masis.

Two citizens, Samvel Gevorgyan and Koryun Tadevosyan, went on hunger strike today at 9am in the town of Masis. They demanded the release of the political prisoners. At about 12pm the police arrested them.

Fortunately, Koryun Tadevosian was released afterwards. Samvel Gevorgyan is still in custody. At this point he can be considered a political prisoner himself.

A list of unsavory characters.

Pigh, aka Togran Kocharian, has posted a criticism list of 'unsavory' characters (pigh.livejournal.com/101493.html) in the current Armenian reality. The language is not very nice so I am not going quote it (people have started spelling մտավորական with a ռ ).

Some time ago there was a website called Bnagir.am that featured contemporary Armenian literature. After a few volumes it then vanished. I suspect the reason was that it was unlike any Armenian literature out there. It did not feature stories about the sweet persimmons of the Ararat Valley or teary eyed complaints about our fate as a 'long suffering nation'. Non compliance with the establishment is usually not tolerated anywhere, especially in small societies like Armenia, so Bnagir disappeared.

But life goes on...

One of Bnagir founders, Vahe Avetyan, has his own website where you can read some interesting works. here is a link to Vernatun.org. Here is a small quote to show what you might expect to see there:

Business environment, banditocracy style.

One of the basic preconditions for a healthy business environment is law and order. Law and order are essential for the everyday life but they are important in making sure that businesses are able to conduct day to day operations and make money and in the process employ people, generate economic activity and help the society prosper. The developed countries have mature legal systems. Armenia has a mature banditocracy. As far as I can tell, banditocracy is not as beneficial as law and order when it comes to the general business environment in the country. It certainly benefits the business entities that are in the banditocracy circle (be it active participants and shapers of the system or the smaller entities that adapt to the situation). It does not benefit the business entities that try to stay within the confines of the law.

Below is a letter from the owner of the soon to be defunct defunct Parisian Cafe highlighting this problem.

Այսօր, ես տխուր եմ: Տասներեք տարի առաջ, ես որոշեցի թողնել Ֆրանսիան, իմ երկրորդ հայրենիքն ու տեղափոխվել Հայաստան` հայրենիքում ներդրում անելու նպատակով` ստեղծելով Փարիզյան սրճարանը: Ես ներդրեցի իմ ժամանակ, էներգիան, առողջությունն ու գումարները, որպեսզի Աբովյան փողոցի վրա լուսավորվի փարիզյան փոքրիկ սրճարանը, որ եղել է գործարար, ընկերական ու հանգստի հանդիպումների վայր: Սակայն այնպես է ստացվել, որ փոքրիկ երազանքս ինձ համար վերածվել է անվերջանալի մղձավանջի:

OVER 100 CITIZENS OF ARMENIA TAKEN INTO CUSTODY SINCE THE SECOND CONGRESS OF THE POPULAR MOVEMENT: PRECONDITION FOR DIALOGUE???

In a telephone conversation with Radio Liberty today, First President Levon Ter Petrosyan’s spokesman, Armen Khatchatryan reported that in Yerevan and elsewhere in the Republic, many citizens who had participated in the opposition rallies—actively or only once or twice—were being called to the police station early in the morning, illegally and under threat.

Police were using their illegal and unjustified interrogation to elicit any information that might be construed as evidence against others or to intimidate them enough to keep them from participating in further actions.

Khatchatryan also stated that the police are calling people in for questioning—although they call it a “chat”—those citizens who were wounded on May 1, and who in principle should have been treated as victims. Rather, they are treated as suspects.

The police have arrested and taken into custody more than 100 citizens since the 2nd meeting of the Congress of the Popular Movement just over one week ago. There were also three new arrests and 10 citizens taken into custody.

And the list of citizens in custody and under arrest continues to grow.

A whole town on hunger strike.

The whole adult population of the small town Dzorakap has gone on hunger strike in support of political prisoners Mushegh Saghatelian and Shota Saghatelian. Dzorakap is a small town in the Shirak Marz and the population have been supportive of the Saghatelians who were born there. The Saghatelians, volunteer soldiers (ազատամարտիկ) in the Karabagh war, were arrested shortly after the violent dispersal of the peaceful protesters in Yerevan on March 1.

Their families have been subject to state terror since then.
