Don't eat that food.

When visiting Armenia, I have been surprised at the lax attitude towards hygiene. It's quite shocking to see the blissfully ignorant faces of the sales clerks while there is a swarm of flies buzzing on bread in the store. Cover the damn things with a cheese cloth, at least!

Aravot today has posted two photographs of the delivery of bread to the government building. A man brings over a box full of bread in the trunk of his car, drops a few loaves on the ground while carrying them to the cafeteria. So he puts the box on the ground (next to a garbage bin) picks up the loaves and then continues to deliver them. Apparently, the area is also a favorite spot for public urination as pictured above.

Freaky stuff.

It was in Armenia (apparently) that the discovery was made that the fresher the meat is, the more bees there are swarming around it.
At least, that's what I'm told at the meat market when looking for good meat to buy.

I think yellow jackets on meat would be OK (they carve out small bits and take them home) but seeing flies on food is just disgusting. I'm not quite sure whether any of this means that the meat is fresh, though. I mean, these guys do not refrigerate the meat and after sitting for a couple in a hot place like Yerevan in the summer, I don't think anything remains fresh.

They probably haven't figured out a way to conceal the 'un'-freshness with bleach like they do in the States.

Sometimes it's just better not to know these things... and the immunity level of people in third world countries must be higher, otherwise outbreaks of terrible diseases would never stop. Yet, it doesn't happen all that often...
