Lately there is a big shortage of good news from Armenia given the political situation and the worsening economic prospects. But this one is somewhat of a good news. The number of the peace-keeping Armenian troops in Kosovo is going to be doubled to 70 soldiers at a time. While the government motives behind this move are questionable (they may be trying to get a couple of points from the NATO countries to use later as a counter balance to the criticism of their internal policies), my opinion is that these kind of programs give the Armenian troops the necessary exposure to the outside world and bring experience much needed to the army. I think it's better them patrolling the streets of Pristina than gaining experience by conducting urban warfare in Yerevan.
Of course, it would have been much better if there was a larger platoon (1000 or so men) stationed in Afghanistan trained and equipped by the US fighting alongside the Americans in Southern Afghanistan. The experience gained from fighting an enemy similar to the ones we can encounter while fighting for Armenia in a similar terrain would be invaluable just like the Afghan war veterans from the Soviet campaign were invaluable during the Gharabagh War.

ReplyDeleteI strongly disagree. No country should be seen as a training ground for any other country's troops. That is an insane idea.
Why side with the losers anyway?
Parisan, on moral grounds you are absolutely right. But since the war is there and is going to be there, it would be a realistic setting for gaining experience in a possible war to keep our country safe and territorially complete.
