Martial Law in Armenia

via nazarian

Using the military in internal affairs is banned by the Armenian Constitution (article 8.2, article 55, part 13). Even with this ban, on March 1, 2008 the army was brought to the streets of Yerevan. Even though the legality of the move has not been challenged yet, the ruling party knows that what they did in 2008 was illegal. Today they have passed a law as a window dressing. According to them, they will bring in the army but have them function as police. So, after the parliamentary elections, we are going to see soldiers on the streets of Yerevan who pretend to be the police.

Of course, in the good old tradition of Armenian lawmaking, the voting was illegal with parliamentarians voting for their absent colleagues as well.
